Our thoughts are with the people of Afghanistan. Right now we are seeing what it means to flee your home. There is no queue, no forms to fill in. People run for safety by every route available. We need an asylum system that recognises the reality of crisis. That means providing routes away from danger, and welcoming those who’ve made their own escape. The Home Office routinely turns down applications for refugee status from those who have made it to the UK. In the last three months of 2020, the Home Office rejected more than half of Afghan applicants. And the new anti-refugee bill makes this situation worse. It will deny refugee status to even more people, particularly those who made their own escape. MPs need to throw out the bill – there is no ‘wrong way’ to flee. The government must urgently grant refugee status to all Afghan asylum seekers in the UK, and open up the family reunion route, so that their loved ones can join them here.
