What is happening with the anti-refugee Borders Bill?
The Borders Bill is currently at Committee Stage in the House of Lords where it is being debated for five days between 27 January – 10 February. The Committee is where Peers debate the proposals in detail, and propose amendments.
Because of the number of amendments that have been put forward, Peers have been sitting late into the night or even until the early hours of the morning during Committee stage. After Committee stage, there is always a 14-day break before the Bill comes back for the next stage, Report Stage, where the whole house looks at the Bill as a whole and votes on amendments. This stage is allotted half the number of days taken at Committee, and will take place on the 1st, 3rd and 8th of March.
Three days after that, the Lords will vote on the Bill, as amended, at Third Reading, and then the Bill goes back to the House of Commons for MPs to consider the contributions made in the Lords.
