On Tuesday 4 October, our Home Secretary Suella Braverman takes to the stage at the Tory party conference to announce the government’s plans on immigration. Sadly, all the hints and headlines indicate that nothing has changed, and she is continuing with the same tried-and-failed model of cruelty that Priti Patel and many Home Secretaries before her championed.
We now know that Suella Braverman is competent at photocopying, but surely we can do better than this? We would love to hear her plans to open up safe routes for asylum seekers, so no one is forced to cross one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world in a dinghy. Or her realisation that the UK’s astronomical visa fees and constant renewals mean more people have been pushed out of official immigration status here than almost anywhere else in Europe.
