Richard spends his days supporting the most vulnerable people in his community, as a professional care worker. When he gets home, he cares for his elderly parents and spends time with his young son. Then, he logs onto Skype for some quality time with his wife and daughter in Russia. It’s the only way the whole family can be together.  
Like thousands of Britain’s care workers, Richard earns below £18,600 a year. So thanks to family migration rules introduced in 2012, Richard’s family is split down the middle – one half in a small Yorkshire fishing village, and the other thousands of miles away in Russia.
