The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) is starting an exciting new project: an advisory board made up of people who have moved to the UK to make it their home, and who have experience of the UK’s immigration system.
JCWI is deeply committed to ending the hostile environment, being part of the movement to tackle structural racism and helping to bring about an immigration system that treats people with dignity. Our organisation’s roots are in community-led organisations set up to combat racism and make life better for people who had migrated to the UK to make it their home.
However, since we were established in 1967, we have moved further away from this community-led model. We know that this needs to change – and that for our work to be effective and meaningful, it must be guided by people who have experienced what we’re fighting against: a racist and oppressive immigration system.
