Introduction
1. The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) is an independent charity established in 1967. Our mission is to promote justice, fairness and equality in British immigration and asylum law and policy. We do this through a combination of policy research and advocacy, and legal casework and strategic litigation relating to all areas of immigration and asylum rights.
2. We advocate for the human rights of migrants and rely on the legal protection of human rights across the UK including through the European Convention on Human Rights, as incorporated in the UK through the Human Rights Act 1998 and Scotland Act 1998. We also rely on the principles and protection afforded through instruments including the UN Refugee Convention, UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (ECAT), International Covenant o…
